Wascana Racing Canoe Club Welcomes You

Welcome to the Wascana Racing Canoe Club website. We are a sprint racing canoe/kayak club located on Wascana Lake in Regina. As a club we are successful at a number of different levels including producing national and international level athletes and providing youth and adults with fun paddling opportunities.

You can find current news on our home page, including upcoming events, activites and highlights of the success of our athletes and volunteers.

If you are looking for program information please click on the program tab and you will find a listing of all our programs, as well as downloadable brochures and registration forms.

The information tab will provide you with some background information about our club, including our history, our club accomplishments and our coaching staff.

Dave Robertson Named National Team Apprentice Coach

CanoeKayak Canada has announced the appointment of Dave Robertson as National Team Apprentice Coach effective February 1, 2010.

CanoeKayak Canada was chosen by the Coaching Association of Canada and Own the Podium to pilot this project will see Dave take part in a number of educational, training and competition experiences over a three year period as part of his coaching development.

Dave will remain in Regina and active as Head Coach with Wascana Racing Canoe club, but will split his time with Canoe Kayak Canada. Wascana sees this as a great opportunity for all partners in the project including Dave and the club athletes.

Byers & Hanson Part of Olympic Celebration!

Kia Byers and Zara Hanson both had an opportunity to feel a strong connection to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as the torch relay made its journey across Saskatchewan.

Zara carried the flame as part of the community celebration on Day 72 in Moosomin. Kia had her turn with the torch on Day 73 in Moose Jaw. Both athletes were part of the procession at the community celebration in Regina when the community cauldron was lit.

Kia and Zara were thrilled to be part of this unique event that brings Canadians together to celebrate. Thanks Kia and Zara for helping ignite the spirit of the Olympics!

Team Sask Named as a Finalist for Award!

Congratulations to the 2009 Canada Summer Games Canoe/Kayak Team for being selected as a finalist for Team of the Year for the 2009 Sask Sport Awards. Wascana athletes on the team were Jacques de Jager, Simon Fense, Lliam Folk, Megan Gibson, Zara Hanson, Ashley Holowatuk, Christopher Laplante, Iain McLeod, Chelsey Mitchell, Riley Schnell and Gina Soparlo. The team was coached by Stephanie Robertson, Andre Gronowicz and Julie Davidsen.

Other canoe/kayak athletes selected as finalists are Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club athletes Trista Neilly and Shylo Wollf, as well as Wascana parent Fiona Vincent.

Other Wascana athletes who were nominated by Canoe Kayak Saskatchewan were Megan Gibson and Lliam Folk. Zoe Hanson was nominated by Racquetball Saskatchewan based on her participation in canoe/kayak and racquetball.

We would encourage all athletes and supporters to attend the 2009 Sask Sport Awards Dinner. It will be held March 25th at the Connexus Art Centre.

More Accomplishments from our Athletes!

Congratulations to Wascana athlete Zoe Hanson who represented Canada at the Junior World Racquetball Championships in Santa Domingo in December. Zoe and her doubles partner Michele Morissette from Quebec came away from the championships with a bronze medal in the 14 & under girls doubles event. Zoe also placed 9th in singles events.

Wascana Hosts 3 Major Events in 2010!

Wascana Racing Canoe Club will be hosting 3 major competiive events in 2010.

Wascana is home to the annual Canada Day Regatta which will run Friday July 2nd to Sunday July 4th. Events will be held in all age categories including Masters.

The Prairie Divisional Regatta will be held on July 31st & August 1st. This event is the qualifying event for those athletes wishing to represent their club at the 2010 Canadian Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships. There will aso be non-qualifying events for age categories outside of those raced at the Canadian Championships.

Wascana is also pleased to be hosing the 2010 Canadian Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships from August 25th to 28th and CanMas (Canadian Masters) on August 29th. Over 1200 atheltes are expected in Regina for a great week of exciting competition.

Congrats Wascana Athletes!

Congratulations to Wascana athletes Megan Gibson and Daniella Zemlak who both had outstanding seasons with their high school volleyball teams.

Megan who plays with Winston Knoll, was a member of the team that won the 5A Regina High School Athletic Association City Championship title and went on to win the 5A Provincial Senior Girls provincial championships.

Daniella, a member of the Regina Christian School, was named as an 4A Senior Girls Allstar by the Regina High School Athletic Association. Daniella’s team placed second overall in the regular season.

Plans Falling Into Place

The plans for the 2010 Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships are falling into place. The official event website is up and running and can be reached at the following link. There are a couple of problems getting the new logo switched in but those should be fixed in the next few days.

The host hotel for the event is the Travelodge Hotel & Conference Centre Regina Look for complete hotel information, including rates, on the nationals website.

Congrats to Wascana Athletes

Congratulations to all 35 athletes who represented Wascana at the Canadian Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships and the 4 athletes who competed at CanMas. In the Canadian Championships, the club placed 10th overall, improving on it’s overall placement from last year by 2 placements.
