Byers and McLeod at Olympic Team Selection Event!
WRCC athletes Tiera McLeod and Kia Byers had great results at the Oympic Team Selection Trials held May 3rd and 4th at Lake Lanier, Georgia.
Kia placed 3rd in the K-1 500m final on Day 1, finishing just behind Olympian Karen Furneaux and seasoned competitor Emilie Fournel. Kia placed first in the K-1 500m on Day 2, 2nd in the K-2 500m, partnering with Jillian D’Alessio. Kia also rounded out the women’s K-4 team which placed 2nd, partnering with D’Allesio, Genevieve Orton and Mylanie Barre.
Tiera placed 7th in the K-1 500m and 7th in the K-2 500m, partnering with Emily Raymond.
Former WRCC athletes Cory Rublee and Kaitlyn Fry also competed at the trials. Rublee finished 6th in the C-1 1000m, 4th in the C-2 1000m and 5th in both the C-1 500m and C-2 500m. Fry finished 8th in the K-1 500m.
This set of trails will be used to as part of the selection process to determine nominations for membership on the 2008 Olympic Team. In addition, the trials will identify athletes for a number of other competitions and teams inlcuding the 2008 Continental Qualifier, the 2008 Pan American Canoe Championships U23 Team and the 2008 International Tour Team.

Summer is Here!
WRCC has an exiting summer of programs, training and competition planned for 2008! If you are new to canoe/kayak and want to learn or if you are looking forward to an exiting and unique competitive challenge, we have it all.
Registration for summer program is now open. WRCC will hold special registration days on April 26th and May 10th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, or drop by any weekday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Contact Wascana Racing Canoe Coub at 780-9258 if you need any further information.

WRCC Athletes Return from Spring Camp!
They are back! Stephanie Robertson and WRCC athletes Nathan Baron, Simon Fense, Megan Gibson, Zara Hanson, Alyssa Kohl, Alannak Kosloski, Iain McLeod, Chelsey Mitchell, Cooper Reis, Riley Schnell and Natalie Schwartz have returned from the provincial Spring Camp in Lake Berryessa, California. The athletes have spent the last 3 to 4 weeks training hard in preparation for the upcoming summer season.
Stephanie is pleased with the results the athletes had at camp and is very excited to get the summer training season started.
WRCC would like to thank Stephanie and Andre Gronowicz for their commitment to the athletes and for providing a great experience in California and to Canoe Kayak Saskatchewan for their financial support of this training opportunity.
Megan Gibson Nominated to Junior National Team
CanoeKayak Canada has announced that Megan Gibson has been nominiated to the junior national team which will represent Canada at the 2008 Pan American Canoe Championships, Montreal, May 15th to 18th.
Megan has been racing completitively for several years and was a member of the canoe/kayak teams for the 2007 Western Canada Games and the 2005 Canada Summer Games. Based on Megan’s performance at the 2007 Canadian Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships, Megan was named to the National Junior Development Team in the fall. She has recenlty returned from several weeks of training with the National Team in Florida and the Provincial Team in California.
The other Saskatchewan member named to the team was Shylo Wollf, who races with the Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club.
Congratulations Megan and Shylo. Best wishes in Montreal and with the upcoming competitive season.

WRCC Annual General Meeting
Waascana Racing Canoe Club will be holding it’s 2007 Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, May 27th at 7:00 pm. It will be held at the Canada Games Centre on Wascana Lake.
All interested persons are invited to attend. Voting privileges are extended to members in good standing with WRCC.

Canada Day Regatta
WRCC is once again preparing for the Canada Day Regatta. The regatta will be held this year from June 28th to 30th on Wascana Lake. This regatta has become one of the premier regattas in Western Canada with close to 200 athletes competing annually. The race card includes events for age categories from Atom to Masters.
Those clubs wishing to obtain information about the regatta should contact Event Coordinator, Mark Reis, at mmr@accesscomm.ca.

Floyd Fry Recognized
WRCC would like to congratulate Floyd Fry who was recently recieved the Sask Sport Volunteer Recognition Award for his outstanding contribution.
Floyd has been involved in the sport of flatwater sprint canoe and kayak for over 15 years. He has volunteered as an official, an organizer and builder, a financial contributer and a mentor. Floyd continues to serve in many capacities nationally, within the Prairie Division and at the local level.
As the CanoeKayak Canada Divisional Official’s Coordinator for the Prairie Division Floyd has done a tremendous amount of work developing officials in the CanoeKayak Canada Prairie Division and throughout Canada. It is because of this work that Saskatchewan has the most accredited officials of any Province in Western Canada.
Floyd has also been very involved in the organization of regattas in Western Canada over the years incluiding the annual Canada Day Regatta in Regina, the recent Western Canada Summer Games in Leduc, the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina and the Canadian National Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships and Canadian Masters Championships in Regina. Floyd was also part of the committee that helped prepare a bid for the 2009 World Junior Canoe/Kayak Championships.
In addition to his organizational work, Floyd has acted in the capacity as an Chief Official and Official’s Coordinator at many events, ensuring the coordnation of volunteers and the effiicent operation of the events.
Floyd has also been a member of several boards inlcuing the Wascana Racing Canoe Club executive, the Regina Canoe and Kayak Association and the Regina Team Boat Paddling Association.
Floyd has left a lasting legacy to the sport and the city of Regina as Floyd through his involvement as a member of the Canoeing/Rowing Capital improvements Committee for the 2005 Jeux Canada Summer Games. This committee managed the reconstruction of the racecourse, the building of new docking facilities, the building of the judges’ stand on Pine Island in conjunction with the Wascana Lake Revitalization Project.
We would like to congratulate Floyd and thank him for all that he has done to see the sport of sprint canoe/kayak grow.
National Team Announcements
Tiera McLeod and Kia Byers, WRCC athletes, have been named to the 2007 – 2008 Sprint Canoe Kayak National Team by Canoe Kayak Canada.
Both Tiera and Kia were members of the Canadian Junior World Team that competed in Szeged Hungary in August of 2005. Both athletes were also members the Team Saskatchewan for the 2001 Canada Summer Games and the 2003 Western Canada Summer Games. As well, this summer Kia represented Canada at two Senior World Cup events in Europe and brought home two medals from the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Megan Gibson, also a WRCC athlete has been named to the National Junior Development Team. Megan was a member of the Team Saskatchewan at the 2005 Canada Summer Games and the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games.
Cory Rublee was also named to the Sprint Canoe Kayak National Team. Rublee is a former resident of Regina and member of the Wascana Racing Canoe Club. He was a multi-medalist for Team Saskatchewan at the 2005 Canada Summer games in Regina. Rublee was also named Saskatchewan Junior Male Athlete of the Year in 2005.

WRCC at Canadian Championships
Welcome home to all athletes, coaches and parents. The Canadian Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships are over for another year and WRCC once again came away with some great results. We had some podium finishes, some personal bests and accomplishments and as always some heartbreaks.

Congratulations to all athletes for a great week of competition. Congratulations as well to all athletes who brought home medals, including the Junior Women’s War Canoe crew for their gold medal race.
