Messager from Don Anderson, CanMas Liaison
CanMas 2006 in Regina promises to be one of the most exciting and entertaining Masters events ever. For the first time we may even see a little East-West rivalry. In the past, the West has offered little competition for the strong eastern Canadian teams, but things have changed significantly out west. The most dramatic change has occurred right in the Host City of Regina.
The past three years have seen a major new emphasis on Masters canoeing and kayaking. The deepening of Wascana Lake and the development of a World-Class finish line adjacent to beautiful “Pine Island” has made Canoeing and Kayaking in Regina a truly outstanding experience. The Regina Masters group has increased in numbers and skill level over the past three years. The enjoyment of the new lake and the excitement of training for the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton has resulted in a great deal of renewed energy for the Masters program. The next World Masters Games is in Sydney Australia in 2009, so we would like to see lots of Canadians training; competing; and enjoying an active lifestyle in preparation for that trip.
We anticipate a full day of racing, but not so full that we have to shorten the racing distance. The 2006 CanMas event will move back to the traditional 500-meter distance. It takes a while for some to get up to full speed so we know you want to race the full 500 Meters. We have an outstanding Dinner and social planned for Sunday evening August 26th.
Additional activities are being planned in advance of Sunday’s CanMas event. We will be offering “Marathon canoe” adventures down a narrow and winding section of Wascana creek each day of the Nationals. Marathon canoeing is very similar to Sprint Canoeing with the added dimension of navigating a current and learning how to take corners at full speed. We can offer some World class coaching, or just a recreational paddle down the creek depending on your interest level.
