Sep 4, 05:32 AM: Success at the Canada Games
Wascana athletes who were members of the canoe-kayak team representing Saskatchewan at the Canada Summer Games were a key part of Saskatchewan’s success at the games.
Megan Gibson, Lliam Folk, Jacques de Jager, Simon Fense and Ashley Holowatuk added to Saskatchewan’s medal count and Chelsey Mitchell, Zara Hanson, Gina Soparlo, Christopher Laplante, Riley Schnell and Iain McLeod all racked up flag points with strong showings in event finals.
Megan won a gold medal in the K-2 200m event and bronze in the K-2 500m event with partner Trista Neilly of Saskatoon. Lliam and Jacques won the bronze medals together in the C-2 200m, 500m and and 1000m events. Simon partnered up with Shylo Wolff of Saskatoon to win bronze in the K-200m event. In most events where Saskatchewan athletes did not medal they took 4th or 5th place.
The weather was not on the side of the athletes. Competetion was postponed on the first day due to the aftermath of Hurricane Bill. Races were also stopped on Wednesday afternoon due to high winds and although the winds did not die down for the rest of the week competition had to continue in order to get the races in.
In all 10 medals were won by Saskatchewan canoe-kayak athletes. Congratulations to all on the team for their hard work, commitment and for proudly representing Saskatchewan at the games.
